“The Commonwealth of Nations is made up of 56 very diverse countries and is home to more than 2.5 billion people. The Charter of the Commonwealth is the expression of the values and aspirations of all Commonwealth countries, and it’s a fitting way to recognise those values by raising the Commonwealth Flag for Peace as we all endeavour to live up to them. Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Hugh Mason said: “This will be the first Commonwealth Day since Her Majesty’s death, and the first presided over by His Majesty King Charles III as King and Head of the Commonwealth. The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Hugh Mason, and the Dean of Portsmouth, Dr Anthony Cane will lead the affirmation and blessing. Commonwealth Day 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter, which was signed by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 11 March 2013.Īlongside the Commonwealth Flag, Portsmouth City Council will raise the Commonwealth Flag for Peace to symbolise the shared values and principles of the Commonwealth, including co-operation on economic and social development, diversity, respect, friendship, and the promotion of peace around the world.
